CITB Unvented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems

Building Regulations Approved Document G3 requires that any person who installs a bulk storage (over 15 litres storage capacity) unvented hot water system must be competent. One method of satisfying this requirement is to hold a CITB Registered Operative identity card. The clause in G3 that lists this as well as acceptable alternatives is as follows:

“3.8 The unit or package should be installed by a competent person i.e. one holding a current Registered Operative identity card for the installation of unvented domestic hot water storage systems issued by:
a. The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB); or
b. The Institute of Plumbing; or
c.

The Association of Installers of Unvented Hot Water Systems (Scotland and Northern Ireland); or

d. Individuals who are designated Registered Operatives and employed by companies included on the list of Approved Installers published by the BBA up to the 31 December 1991; or
e. An equivalent body.”

Various training options are available to the installer to assist in preparing for the assessment.

Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999

The Water Byelaws for England and Wales were replaced by Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations on 1st July 1999.Water companies are establishing Approved Installer Schemes where plumbers who are members of such a scheme would undertake to ensure that their workmanship and the fittings they have installed comply with the Regulations. To become an Approved Installer, the installer will need to demonstrate to the Water Company that they not only have sufficient experience, but can also prove an acceptable level of understanding on the new water regulations.

The British Plumbing Employers Council (BPEC) have developed a course which, upon successful completion, will be jointly certificated with the Water Regulations Advisory Service (WRAS). The course offers flexibility and can be completed through home study or by attending a training centre.
